Dog killed by poaching bow-hunter

October
27

An article today about a family’s dog shot and killed by a bow hunter in Tackamack Park/Blauvelt State Park elicited more than a hundred responses by mid-day. Many blast all hunting, others started fingerpointing because dogs off-leash aren’t allowed in the park, where hunting, of course, is banned too.

One reader believed the hunter, or as many pointed out, poacher, should have stepped forward:

This “hunter” should be caught and prosecuted for poaching. A husky doesn’t resemble a deer or a coyote. What I find worrisome is that this person, whoever he is, did not come forward and say anything to the owners of the dog. Not “I’m sorry” or “I didn’t mean to do this.”

One hunter pointed out that it is a privilege to hunt on designated lands, which this and the adjoining state park are not:
Sadly, a situation like this overshadows hunters, such as myself, who exercise great caution and consideration for the surroundings which enable us to enjoy our chosen sport.

And this:
The person who shot this dog was no more a “hunter” than a street drug dealer is a pharmacist. Since hunting is illegal in the town park, the shooter was a poacher, not a hunter.

Incident obviously raises the question of the best way to reduce the deer herds and their damage to local forests.

Yes. and it’s an ongoing discussion in Rockland. This property is so close to homes, it is hard to envision anyone considering this a place to allow bowhunting. But the Legislature is studying a plan, similar to Westchester, that would allow bowhunting for the purpose of controlling the deer (over)population. There’s a world of difference for Rockland, including but not limited to: Less actual space in county parks; no outline for licensing, training, etc. for the limited hunters who would qualify; no study of the actual vs. perceived damage to the understory by deer.
Andy, though, you are right, this is worth close monitoring.

For anyone that doesnt know the area, the shooting happened a few dozen feet from this street. The arrow could have hit anyone that lived there or anyone out to enjoy the park for the day. The poacher is a serious moron, he has made the park unsafe and put hunters in a terrible light. He is a worthless human being! Mt fear is he is the tip of the iceburg and there are more poachers out there that think this illigal activity is ok.

He is caught and being charged!

It was the hunter not knowing what he was doing.
    A. he was poaching.
    B. he shot at something that was not a deer.

Don’t blame the dog being off the leash, that was the owners fault, besides what if the dog ran off? does it make it right it was shot?
