More schools in

September
6

Now, at least one day of school is behind every Rockland district (even Pearl River schools got in one day before classes were canceled at all schools after a bomb threat was called in this morning. Yes, sad but true.)
Besides the aforementioned mess, we’ve been getting a lot of letters, mostly complaints about transportation. Some parents are mad their middle schoolers have to cross busy streets. Some think it’s unfair that their high schoolers have to walk a mile to school. There are the requisite complaints of late buses. A couple families who had the school bus come into their cul-de-sac are disappointed that this year, their kids have to go out the main road and cross to the other side to pick up the bus. (Even my bus stop has some grumbles. The driver has a bad habit of taking off before all the kids are seated on the elementary school bus. This isn’t new. He did it last year and it was just as irritating.)
What seems fair for school bus service? It’s a huge part of every district’s budget. The safety-cost formula is a tricky one. Where does convenience come in? Thoughts?

And we wonder why our kids are overweight.

ok, walking a mile, i can do that in my sleep. But the issue is, the sidewalks. There are way too many roads with shoulders but no sidewalk. so walking a mile can be treacherous. believe me if there were proper streets, my older kids would walk to school. The problem is , most of the walk would be done on the road and its way too dangerous. I do it, but thats because I’m stupid ;-p

Both good points. And, yes, Steve C., I’ve been known to be stubborn and walk places that I wouldn’t let my kids walk. But I still have that California mentality (even 20 years later) that pedestrians always have the right of way.
Funny, those big wide sidewalks in CA, and, as the song says, nobody walks in LA. The sidewalk issue here is a real one. It’s understandable, when we think about the way development happens. But, still, the lack of consistent sidewalks along major roadways (like Route 59) surely is frustrating.

They steal so much property from residence, yet there’s no sidewalk. or if it is it ends for no real reason. and starts across the street. then stops again.
thats what happens when a brooklyn boy used to sidewalks comes upstate. and yes to me anything over the chimpanzee bridge is upstate. ;-]
been here 9 years, i am still form brooklyn ;-]
